FYI Alison and I are still very happy together. This poem is in retrospect. It doesn't hurt to know how you messed thing up when you did, even when you've been lucky enough to get a second chance.
I agree, unrequited love has got to be the worst. But this piece is not about that so much, as it is about my having believed I was ineffectual, the reason why our love was unrequited.
Someone very wise just told me that it's best to focus on the present and the love that's here now, and I agree with her one hundred percent. We're not really quite present if we are spending our time thinking about what might have been or what could be.
